vegan hot chocolate bomb topped with sprinkles and a marshmallow.

We're full swing into the winter months, and I don't know about you, but that means I'm constantly wanting a hot beverage in my hands.

There is nothing better than a cozy mug full of hot chocolate with a mound of mini vegan marshmallows piling over the top. (In fact, my vegan marshmallow recipe is Perfect for hot chocolate season!)

The last couple years, there's been a new craze when it comes to hot chocolate, and it's these crazy fun hot chocolate bombs, so I figured it was time to give them a makeover and give you the perfect homemade Vegan Hot Chocolate Bombs!

What is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?

Valid question. They kind of came out of nowhere.

A hot chocolate bomb is a chocolate shell that has delicious hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, and sometimes fun sprinkles inside. You place the bomb in a mug and pour your steamed plant-based milk over the top. The hot milk melts the chocolate shell and releases your hot cocoa mix and all those fluffy little marshmallows.

It's such a fun and different way to enjoy hot chocolate, and it's a great winter-time gift!

    Ingredient Spotlight

Vegan Chocolate Chips - A couple of my favorite brands are Enjoy Life and Simple Truth. Both make a great-tasting chocolate that will be perfect for these hot chocolate bombs

Granulated Sugar - Be sure to use granulated sugar rather than raw or coconut sugar. This will allow for the best dissolving properties.

Cacao Powder - I like to use unsweetened cacao powder, but if all you have is cocoa powder, that would do in a pinch.

Sea Salt - I've learned that adding just a pinch of sea salt to desserts really enhances the chocolate flavors.

Mini Vegan Marshmallows - I don't know about you, but watching the mini marshmallows pop out from the hot cocoa bomb is my favorite part of the whole charades!

Optional Toppings and decorations - Feel free to get creative with the decorations. Different colored sprinkles and sugar. Extra drizzling chocolate. Cacao nibs. More marshmallows.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Vegan Hot Chocolate Bombs

Let me show you exactly how to make these vegan hot chocolate bombs for yourself! (and follow along with the step by step pictures below)

Step 1 - Melt the chocolate. In a medium bowl, melt the chocolate chips in 30-second intervals until smooth. Alternatively, see the notes in my Pro Tips below and in the recipe card for how to temper the chocolate if you're wanting a smooth and glossy look.

Step 2 - Fill the molds. Place one tablespoon of the melted chocolate in the center of each mold. Use a pastry brush or spoon to swirl the chocolate around the mold and cover all sides.

Step 3 - Freeze. Transfer the mold to the freezer for 3 minutes.

Step 4 - Layer on the chocolate. Remove the mold from the freezer and repeat the same process. Continue to fill the molds one tablespoon at a time, freezing for 3 minutes in between each layer until all the chocolate has been used. Once you've finishing layering on the chocolate, freeze for 15 minutes.

Step 5 - Remove the chocolate. Carefully remove the chocolate spheres from the mold cavities and set aside.

Step 6 - Make filling. In a small bowl, combine the sugar, cacao powder, and sea salt. Divide the mixture and the marshmallows between 3 of the sphere halves.

Step 7 - Melt edges. Warm a plate in the microwave for 30-45 seconds until hot. Place the unfilled sphere halves on the warm plate, allowing the edges to melt for about 5 seconds.

Step 8 - Put it all together. Carefully sandwich the filled and unfilled spheres together. If desired, add a bit of melted chocolate to a piping bag and go around the center of each bomb to create a tighter seal.

Step 9 - Decorate. Drizzle with additional chocolate if desired and top with optional toppings.

These Hot Chocolate Bombs are everything you’ve ever needed when it comes to chocolate treats:

    • Fun for the entire family
    • Super customizable
    • Great for neighbor, teacher, or friend gifts
    • Worth the hassle to see your kiddos' faces light up when the hot cocoa is revealed

    Cindy's Insider Pro Tips

Temper the chocolate to make sure you get that glossy shine.

If you're just making these vegan hot chocolate bombs for your family, maybe you don't care about them not being perfect, but if you're gifting these out, that extra special touch of a high-gloss shine will be super impressive.

To temper the chocolate, you will need to finely chop the chocolate. Place ⅔ of the chocolate in a double boiler, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water. Using a thermometer, stir and bring the chocolate to 120°F.

Once melted, remove from heat. Stir in the remaining ⅓ of the chocolate in a little at a time. Keep stirring and allow the chocolate to cool to 82°.

Place back on the heat and bring back to 88-92° and then remove from heat.

The chocolate is now tempered and you can add it to the molds.

Wear kitchen gloves to avoid fingerprints.

You definitely don't want to ruin your glossy tempered chocolate when popping the chocolate out of the molds or pressing them together. Be sure to use kitchen gloves to avoid getting fingerprints all over your chocolate speres.

    Choose quality chocolate

I know the recipe says to use chocolate chips, and for ease that's still what I recommend, but another way to really take these bombs up a notch is to use real quality chocolate. Look for a chocolate bar that is at least 60% or more cocoa, has cocoa butter, and sugar. This will give you a chocolate that will melt easily when adding hot milk but also allowing it to harden in the mold.

    Hot Chocolate Bombs FAQs

How do I make hot chocolate with a hot chocolate bomb?

Place the hot chocolate bomb in a glass or a mug. Pour hot or warm milk over the top of the hot chocolate bomb. You want to be sure it is pretty warm so everything melts and dissolves properly. Stir everything together and enjoy!

What type of molds are best for this recipe?

I've found success with these hot chocolate bomb molds that I just order right off Amazon. They are the perfect size and are not very expensive.

What is the best way to add the chocolate in the mold?

I think it works best to spoon a small amount into the mold and then use a pastry brush or even a small decorating brush to paint the chocolate in the mold. This creates a clean and even finish for each layer.

What's the best way to remove the chocolate from the mold without breaking them?

Of course, you'll want to be very careful. I ensure I've used a few layers to create a strong sphere. Carefully turn the mold inside out and pop the chocolate sphere halves out.
To fill the spheres, turn the chocolate mold over and place the chocolate sphere between the molds. This will hold them in place while you fill them with your hot chocolate mix and vegan marshmallows.

How do I store and keep these hot chocolate bombs?

Hot chocolate bombs will keep for several weeks if stored in a cool dry place. If you're giving these as a gift, they are really pretty in a clear plastic bag tied with a festive ribbon. Of course, be sure to include instructions on how to make the hot chocolate!
