  • Combine the coconut milk and sugar in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.

  • Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and cook for 40 to 50 more minutes, whisking frequently until it thickens.
  • Cool the vegan condensed milk to room temperature, then refrigerate it in an airtight container for 7 to 10 days.

Notes

  • To get the same creamy consistency as traditional condensed milk, it’s important to use full-fat coconut milk as the base for your vegan sweetened condensed milk.
  • Sweeten your coconut condensed milk with a mix of maple syrup and coconut sugar to bring out deeper flavors! Just a heads-up: the coconut milk mixture will turn golden, and you’ll need to simmer it longer since the liquid sweetener adds volume and changes the consistency.
  • Patience is key because cooking your dairy-free condensed milk over low heat can take up to 50 minutes. You’ll also need to stir constantly to prevent it from burning at the bottom.
