Ingredients

For the bloody filling:

For the dairy-free buttercream:

Instructions

  • Make the vegan brownies accordingly and allow them to cool.
  • For the bloody filling, combine the strawberries, granulated sugar, water, and cornstarch in a small saucepan.
  • Bring to a slow simmer, stirring frequently for 4 to 5 minutes or until the strawberry mixture thickens. Remove from heat once the consistency is jelly-like. Set aside to cool.
  • Reserve 1/4 cup of strawberry filling for the "slash marks."
  • Spread the remaining strawberry filling on top of the vegan brownies and refrigerate for 1 hour to set.
  • Meanwhile, beat the buttercream ingredients until smooth.
  • Top the brownies with the vegan buttercream and return them to the fridge for another hour.
  • Cut the brownies into squares. Make slash marks through the buttercream on each brownie. You can use any serving utensil with prongs.
  • Fill in the slash marks with the reserved strawberry filling, and you're done! Enjoy your spooky, bloody brownies!

Notes

  • You can also cover the vegan spooky brownies with fondant! Knead in dusty rose and black food coloring to the white fondant until the color is skin-like. Mark the surface to add texture and score the fondant for the bloody slash marks.
  • Add cherries, water, sugar, and lemon juice to a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Stir in a paste made from water and cornstarch, reduce the heat to low, and simmer, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens.
  • Another way to decorate bloody brownies for Halloween is with eyeballs made from lychees and blueberries! Pat the lychees dry and place blueberries in their centers for the pupils.
