If you’ve been around for at least a couple weeks, I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’ve talked about Mindful Eating. Some of you may already know, or at least be familiar with the terminology, if you have dabbled in any sort of eating disorder recovery program.
First off, mindful eating is not a diet. There are no rules, menues, or recipes. You don’t cut out any food groups like breads or meats. And there is no calorie counting. I don’t know about you, but when I first made the choice to kick my eating disorder out of my life, the thought of not counting calories or cutting certain foods out really scared the crap out of me. For years, I had been restricting foods, and I didn’t know how to eat normally with those foods allowed in my life.
But let me say this – Mindful eating is less about what you eat and more about the way you eat! Basically you eat only the amount that your body needs in order to function properly. You’re probably asking, “How am I supposed to know exactly what I need though? My hunger signals are so skewed and I have no idea how many calories are in a handful of potato chips!”
Rest assured, my friends. I will be helping you there. I will give you the tools you need. It takes practice. It takes some real listening to your body in a way that maybe you never have before. You may have to retrain yourself to even know when you’re hungry! I know I had to. I had taught myself to ignore those hunger signals for years, so that all had to be learned all over again.
You will learn to ask yourself questions such as, “Do I really want a snack? Or am I just reacting to food with automatic habits?” You will get down to the real reasons why you want to eat what you’re eating.

Today is the day to decide if you’re ready to make some real changes.
Are you in? Is anything holding you back?
