What do you think of when you think about getting in a workout? You gotta get changed into workout gear. You have to gather all your gear. Maybe you have to drive to the gym. Then of course there’s the issue of actually getting motivated enough to even go through with the workout. It’s exhausting before you even get started sometimes!
These days, my thoughts about working out are a lot less stressed then they used to be. I hope you have a revelation while reading this post, because I know I did when I realized this one key point.
Years ago, when I’d think about getting fit and exercising more, I always pictured myself having to go to the gym every day, having to have a written out routine, and of course having to have all the right gear. Boy was I wrong!
It turns out, all I needed to do was MOVE. That’s right. Just move.
Your workout does not have to be anything fancy. You can be in your jeans with the music cranked up loud and have a dance party right in your living room. Or you can take your dog out to the field and run around with him. Or you can walk around your neighborhood with your next-door neighbor. None of this is fancy, right?
None of this requires special equipment. None of this requires a personal trainer. None of this requires extra money.
All it requires is a change in mindset and a little bit of planning. You still need to plan what you’re going to do to get your heart rate pumping for 20-30 minutes. But it doesn’t have to be extreme.
First of all, let’s talk about the clothes and gear you need to get in a workout.
If you have workout clothes you’d prefer to workout in, that’s great. Make it happen. But don’t stress about it. If you don’t have money for new gear, fine. Can you move in your jeans? Can you move in your underwear? Can you move in your pajamas?
The answer is yes, yes, and yes! And yes, I’ve totally worked out in my underwear on occasion. There’s no shame in it. Sometimes I’ll wake up, and before I jump in the shower sometimes I just need to get a few crunches or pushups in. Easy peasy. No big deal.
There is such a high expectation that society has put on us that we must wear a certain exercise “uniform” in order to be fit. Whether it’s a Lulu Lemon outfit that your neighbor wears. Or a super cute and flashy sport’s bra you saw on some fitspo post. I promise you that you don’t need it.
Don’t let what you don’t have get in the way of a great workout. Work with what you have and maybe use a new outfit as a reward for reaching a goal that you’ve made for yourself.
Secondly, come up with ways you can workout right here and now without much fuss.
Have a list of activities that you can do that will get your heart rate up. Because that’s really what matters, right?
Here are some of my favorites:
- Living Room Dance Party! Turn on your favorite music and just start dancing. You don’t need workout gear for this at all!
- Cleaning Party! I know I know. Cleaning is not always fun, but once you start moving and getting it done (usually with awesome tunes to push you through), you’ll realize that you got in a workout AND have a clean house when all is said and done.
- Commercial Break Workout! See how many jumping jacks you can do during the commercials. Or how many crunches. Or try to work up to being able to plank through the entire commercial. Make it fun!
- Take your kids or dogs out to play! Whether it’s just a walk or a full-on game of tag/catch, being outside and just moving doesn’t usually feel like working out and is generally more fun than anything.
- Find a YouTube Workout! I love finding easy workouts on YouTube that are already prepped for me. No thinking involved. Just gotta push play!
These are all great ways to workout and get my heart rate up without feeling the pressure of doing something regimented.
Let go of those expectations. Just MOVE!
Get outside. Turn up the music. Have fun with your family.
Once you realize how good it makes you feel, you may eventually step it up and do even more with weights or a workout video. Or maybe that’s where you’re at now. Just know that you don’t HAVE to do those types of things in order to get fit and healthy. You could alternate between a “proper & planned” workout and something more casual spur of the moment throughout the week. Keep it interesting.
