Well, I’m going to just assume that your Thanksgiving menu is pretty much already planned out, and possibly even partly prepped. You probably even know what beverages you are going to serve at the big feast. But the question is, what is the beverage you are going to sip on once is all finally done and over with. When all the pie is eaten, the dishes are done, everyone has left (or you’ve gone back home if you’re not hosting), and all you want to do is relax in front of one of your favorite movies. What drink are you going to bring to the couch with you?
Every single winter, I do this thing where I basically just complain because I don’t have any alcoholic options that are going to warm me up when it’s 9 degrees outside. I know I could just opt-out all winter, but there’s really no fun in that. So I’ve decided to give myself an option where I can OPT-IN!
Seriously, if you like comforting warm drinks that just get you in the mood to put the Christmas tree up and watch Home Alone, then you are in for a real treat. A lot of times, ginger is an overpowering spice, but in this instance, it is anything put overpowering. It is complimentary in the best of ways. And the citrus adds a lightness to the taste. Oh, and if you are sitting here shaking your head back and forth saying that you hate whiskey, ummm… you can’t even taste it! Seriously, it’s invisible in this drink, and the butterscotch adds a warm creamy note. Ahh, I can’t say enough good things about this little toddy. Never actually thought I’d ever make a toddy. Oh, I am so so glad I did.
I made a delicious toddy for you, and I hope you enjoy it. It’s still Wednesday – the liquor store is still open, so go grab all your ingredients (but I guess if you live outside of Utah, you can probably pick up the whiskey and schnapps at the grocery store regardless of a holiday or not. Jealous!). You are going to want to be sure that this drink is ready to go the moment everyone leaves, the kids get in bed, and you can finally crash.
Spiced Hot Apple Toddy
makes 1 drink
print friendly version
about 1 cup apple juice or cider
1 slice each of an apple, orange, and lemon
1 ounce Black Velvet whiskey
1/2 ounce Butterscotch Schnapps
peeled fresh ginger, coarsely chopped (about a thumb-sized amount)
mulling spices (whole cloves, cinnamon stick, allspice, nutmeg, etc)
Add the ginger, mulling spices, fruit slices, and juice (or cider) in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
Let simmer for 5-15 minutes (or more if you want some intense flavor).
Add a small drizzle of honey into your glass, add your liquors, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Then with a ladle, scoop your drink into your glass. Add whatever garnishes from the simmering pot you would like. I enjoyed the orange slice, apple slice, and cinnamon stick.
You know what else this drink would be great for? Sitting on the couch by the fireplace and watching your significant other set up the Christmas tree. I’m sure they’ll appreciate your opinionated help from afar…
