How to Stay Healthy and Fit During the Holidays

I’m sharing my love of Ricola® Herb & Throat drops as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars. #swissherbs

The holidays can be a difficult time to keep up with your healthy lifestyle, so I’ve put together a few actionable tips that will help you stay healthy and fit during the holidays.

My fitness plans that I’ve been so diligent in keeping up with all year tend to kind of slide off around mid-November. They don’t quite come to a halt, but they definitely are a lot harder to fit in when there are so many aspects of the holiday that need taking care of.

Of course there’s the gifts that need to be bought, wrapped, and hidden. Then there’s the big feasts that need to be planned. The events to attend. The neighbor gifts to create. The cookies to bake and decorate. The elf to move around each night. The snow to shovel. The volunteering. The donating. The EVERYTHING THAT MAKES YOUR TINSEL-WRAPPED HEAD SPIN!

There’s so much, and it’s enough to make us crazy. The thought of staying healthy and working out can be seemingly impossible.

Schedule Short & Easy Workouts:

You should do this right now before life gets crazy. Don’t wait for the crazy to happen because as you know there will be no time for planning if you wait for the crazy times. Right now, come up with 5 workouts that will only take you 20-30 minutes to complete.

Oh guess what, I have a few for you right here!

Hip-Hop Zumba-Inspired Dance Workout
Killer At-Home AB Workout
At-Home Cardio Workout without Big Equipment
10-Minute Skinny Jeans Workout

There, now there are no excuses cause I just did the work for you. No, really, find workouts you love that will work for you.

Because on the days when you feel like you have no time to workout, you aren’t going to want to think about it. So to have it already planned out for you will be a relief so you can just get it in and move on with your busy day.

PLUS! It’s a bonus because working out combats stress! Which takes me to my next point.

Bundle Up and Go for a Run, Walk, or Jog:

I know, I know. It’s COLD!

But I promise you, it’ll be worth it. Get outside, get some fresh air, and just get moving. Of course, make sure you’re dressed for the weather. (Check out this post which will tell you exactly how to stay warm so you can keep workout out when it gets cold)

Whether it’s a walk, a jog, or a full-on run, it’ll feel good just to get moving. It’ll erase the stress of the day (week… month…). It’ll give you time to think. It’ll clear your mind and prepare you for the next task at hand.

Working out really is one of the absolute best stress-relievers, and it also produces endorphines, all those amazing feel-goods, that make you feel amazing and on top of the world.

Stick to your regular eating schedule:

Don’t be Distracted by the Holiday Treats:

Ok, this is a big one. So I want you to think about two Oreos side by side. One is a classic Oreo with white cream, and the other is a holiday Oreo with red of green cream filling. (oooohhh ahhhh!) I can pretty much guarantee which one will go first. The “fancy” holiday version.

There is something about adding red or green food coloring to a regular old food that gets us excited. And oh boy, if there are coordinating sprinkles, it’s game over, right?

I’ve got to remind myself. Much of the time, this is a normal every day food or treat that is cleverly disguised as holiday fare. Remember that you can get this food every other day of the year and it will probably taste pretty similar, so you don’t have to hoard them during the holiday months.

Take Time for Yourself:

With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s hard to remember to slow down. It seems like it’s go-go-go all day every day, only to collapse into an exhaustion once the big holiday celebration gets here.

This year, I’m totally planning on taking more time for myself. Time to just breathe! Even if it’s just an hour or two a week. A bubble bath. Time alone with a good book. A nap.

I think it’s so important to give ourselves rest, especially when our bodies are telling us to. Often, I try to push through an oncoming sickness in hopes that i can just ignore it. You know, you feel that scratchy throat for a couple days. You pretend it’s not there. And then BOOM! You’re feeling miserable and can’t do anything at all.

If we had just let ourselves rest at the first signs of that scratchy throat, we may have been healed in no time! That’s one reason why I love Ricola’s Dual Action Honey Lemon Throat Drops.

Those herbs are the number one reason why I use Ricola over any other throat drop because it’s all-natural and absolutely effective. You can’t go wrong there!

How to Prevent Back to School Sickness - you know, you send the kids back to school and pretty much start counting down the days when they will come home with a case of the sniffles. These few tips keep those sniffles at bay for as long as possible (and a tip for when they just can't avoid it!)

I hope this helps you to feel a little less stressed. I know this time of year can be more stressful than enjoyable, but I truly love the holidays and do my best to make sure they’re a memorable time with family. Not a time I’m pissed off at myself for not keeping up with my fitness plans.

When it comes down to it, be gentle with yourself. You cannot do it all. Do your best and enjoy the things that truly matter. Friends and family and the memories you will make together.
