Exercise in a hotel can be hard, but staying fit and keeping up with your healthy lifestyle is totally achievable, even while you’re on the road! Find out how to get a Stellar Workout while Travelling!
This post was sponsored in part by Visit Denver, and gave me the ability to bring you amazing inspired content from another part of the country.
Happy Saturday! My goodness, I can’t believe I’m getting to you so late in the day! If you haven’t noticed, I’ve actually been posting every single day for the last 3 weeks, and to say that it has burnt me out and driven me a little mad is a complete understatement. My wish was to keep this up for the whole month of November, but we will see. It may require multiple huge boxes of wine. Yes, boxes. Keepin’ it real folks.
So if you remember, I was in Denver a couple weekends ago. I was exploring the city with my wife and finding the top health-spots.
For a lot of people, going on vacation and travelling means a wrench is about to be thrown into their fitness routine. You know what my thoughts are when I go out of town?
I get excited for the increased activity I’ll be enduring while I’m away. Seriously. My fitness tracker is put to WORK on these trips. Granted, none of my trips lately have been spent on a beach where I’m just lounging and sleeping for days.
So you’re probably wondering, how do I do it? How do I keep so active while on vacation? Isn’t vacation supposed to be relaxing with no stress about staying healthy?
My philosophy is this. Staying healthy is not a sometimes thing. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a forever thing. It’s a part of life. And that right there has changed the way I keep up with my fitness regime while I’m on vacation.
First thing’s first.
PICKING YOUR HOTEL:
What the hell does the hotel have to do with your healthy vacation? EVERYTHING.
The location matters. And the fitness center matters. So let’s start with location.
You want to stay at a hotel that is downtown. Somewhere centrally located to all the things you want to see and do while you’re in that particular city. While I was in Denver, I knew that we wanted to visit a ton of downtown attractions. So of course, it made sense for us to just get a hotel downtown so we could walk everywhere.
And that we did.
We were lucky enough to be able to stay at The Curtis, which is seriously one of the cutest hotels I’ve ever stayed in ever! It’s retro. It’s kitschy. It’s just the best. And it’s literally right downtown in the middle of all the hustle and bustle.
Every day, we put in an average of 18,000 steps, reaching our 10,000 goal usually by lunchtime. So in the last post where I talked about all the places to eat in Denver, it was literally all made possible by all those steps. I didn’t feel gross by indulging a bit because I was moving all day long.
BONUS: you save money on a rental car!
Ok, second tip when choosing your hotel.
CHECK OUT THE FITNESS CENTER!
Most hotel websites will have pictures of their fitness centers, and as soon as I saw the one at The Curtis, I knew I just had to stay there.
You walk into the fitness room, and you’re just hit with bright color, awesome energy, and in reality, you get excited to work out! That’s definitely a plus.
The Curtis’s fitness room had all the equipment I could ever need for my workout away from home. A stationary bike, treadmills, ellipticals, weights, exercise balls, medicine balls, kettlebells, mats, etc etc. The list really goes on! And it’s big enough that it didn’t even seem crowded when it got busy, which is totally a plus.
If you need a little inspiration on what workouts to do when you’re away from home, this post from Tone and Tighten is for you. Jared has mapped out some perfect workouts that you can do if you’re just in your hotel room, away from your personal trainer, or just feeling lost away from your routine.
Once we left the hotel to explore the city, we realized just how much of a health-centric city Denver is.
Not only were there health-conscious restaurants (you can see the ones I mentioned here) but there were tons and tons of workout centers, yoga studios, and just ways to stay active.
And it’s definitely a walking city. People are always walking, which is something I’m not used to in Salt Lake City’s downtown. Sure, some people are walking during business hours during the week, but in general, it’s not socially a walking city. The streets are bustling and full of life on the weekends like we have noticed in other cities like Portland, Seattle, and Denver.
Another way Denver likes to keep its city active, healthy, and green is by offering a bicycle program, B-Cycle.
I have to be 100% honest here. I was scared out of my mind. I know how crazy and rude drivers can be in big cities, and the idea of riding a bike right next to those drivers scared the shit outta me. But I knew I had to get out of my comfort zone and try it out.
Let me just tell you. I had the time of my life on these bikes! And we were able to go much farther than we would have been able to go on foot.
On our last day in Denver, after lunch at Comida, we decided to grab a couple bikes and check out the Science and Nature Museum (which had an AWESOME health exhibit that you must check out!).
I was a little shaky at first, since I’m honestly not the best on a bike (unless it’s stationary in my living room), but I just kept pedaling and eventually was on my way. I HIGHLY recommend trying out Denver’s B-Cycle Program. Even if you don’t want to ride in the busy city, there is a Cherry Creek Trail that I hear is absolutely gorgeous and a great place to ride. We wanted to check that out but ran out of time.
Between our thousands and thousands of steps, workouts in the mornings at the fitness center, and bike rides through Denver, I have to say we were utterly exhausted by the end of each trip.
So my last piece of advice is to read the hotel’s reviews so you can get a feel for what people have to say about the quality of beds they have. If people don’t sleep well in the hotel, they WILL voice their opinions!
I am very very pleased to say that The Curtis had one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in. We slept hard each night and were well-rested so we could get up and get in our steps the next day!
So I hope that was helpful for you. I hope you now realize that vacation doesn’t have to mean a break in your fitness plans, as long as you PLAN it right.
That’s the name of the health game, folks. PLANNING.
I absolutely loved my time in Denver, as it is a healthy city that allowed me to really enjoy all the tastes and sips without feeling guilty about it!
