I used to be a daily gym-goer. Either first thing in the morning or right after work, I’d make my way with the masses and get my fitness on.

Sounds wonderful, right?

Well before I could get my fitness on, I had to get ready, drive myself through the masses of traffic to actually get there, and then deal with all the people that have also made their way to the gym. Let me tell you. After awhile, this became not very fun.

Even when I was going to Zumba classes, there were so many people that would go to the classes that you’d have to get there 45 minutes before class started just to get a spot. FORTY-FIVE MINUTES!! That’s the amount of time it takes me to make dinner! Or the amount of time it takes me to shower, dry my hair, and put make up on.

OR in those forty-five minutes I could…

Walk to my spare bedroom, unroll my yoga mat, and get a wonderful peaceful yoga session in.

OR I could…

Change into some workout pants and a sports bra, throw on some shoes and head downstairs to my bike.

MUCH more productive!

One day I was sitting there waiting for Zumba class to start, and I added it all up. All the time involved in going to the gym. The results were shocking!

1. Traffic to and from the gym. 40 minutes. Yes, I had to spend 40 minutes driving to the gym every day. When I was going after work, I was having to go out of my way in order to get there and I had to take a busy rush-hour route. And leaving the gym was no better. The roads were still busy and bogged down my time getting home. Absolutely frustrating.

2. Waiting on the machines you want to use (or waiting on class to start). 15-40 minutes. Some days I would only spend 15 minutes waiting to do what I needed to do. Other days it was 40 minutes waiting for class to start so I could be sure to get a spot.

3. Getting ready for the gym. 10 minutes. Yes, I know this one’s silly, but it happens. Gotta make sure I don’t look like death walking into the gym. So yes, I touch up my makeup and get my hair in the most perfect messy bun that I possibly can, and those things take time.

4. Feeling overwhelmed. 20 minutes. Seriously. Have you ever just stayed on the cardio machines longer than you needed to just because you weren’t really sure what to do next. What machines to do and in what order. Do I stretch first? Or last? How do you even use that machine? There’s too many guys over by the weights, so you don’t want to go over there quite yet. Ahhh! Before you know it, you’ve spent half an hour just overwhelming yourself about working out.

Now add it all up – That’s anywhere from 1 and a half to almost 2 hours of wasted time!

And I don’t know about you, but in my jam-packed day, I have about zero minutes to waste. Heck, I even go nuts if I get to school pick-up just a few minutes early with nothing to do. So it was a big deal when I realized just how much time I was wasting by heading to the gym to workout.

Once I came to the realization, I knew the answer was to start at home workouts. So I went through Youtube and found some awesome workout routines. I browsed all the fitness blogs and came up with some ideas that would work for me and my small space and limited monetary resources.

    I went through the gym craze in my 20’s, and like you figured out, it was cheaper and much more productive to do my workouts at home.

    I recently arrived at the exact same conclusion! I was wasting so much time getting to pure barre 30 min early to get a spot, now I just do as much as I can at home, in addition to my running schedule.
