Ingredients And Substitutions For Healthy Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie

Old-fashioned oatsOats help thicken this dairy-free chocolate peanut butter smoothie. Just make sure to use old-fashioned oats, as steel-cut oats won’t blend well.

Chia seeds – Thicken and give this delicious peanut butter chocolate smoothie a fiber boost!

Flax seeds – Another fiber-boosting addition to this healthy chocolate peanut butter smoothie. It also helps the mixture achieve a nice, thick consistency.

Vanilla protein powder This healthy peanut butter cup smoothie is packed with extra protein in the yummiest way possible!

Vanilla non-dairy Greek yogurt – Greek-style vegan yogurt adds protein and makes a creamier, thicker pb cup smoothie.

Water – For adjusting the creamy chocolate peanut butter smoothie’s consistency.

Banana – Lower your brows because you won’t taste the banana in this decadent Reese’s-inspired, healthy smoothie. Frozen banana will just naturally sweeten and thicken the smoothie, so don’t forget to pop it in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours beforehand.

Cocoa powderYou can’t make a peanut butter cup smoothie without unsweetened cocoa powder. This gives the blend a rich chocolate flavor.

Natural peanut butter – Natural, creamy peanut butter keeps this healthy chocolate peanut smoothie tasty without the unnecessary ingredients in a regular pb.

Dairy-free chocolate chips – These are optional, but the texture and taste they add make every sip of this delightful blend extra enjoyable.

Ice cubes – Ice cubes are more than just for keeping your homemade smoothies cool. The extra bulk they add also contributes to the thickness of the smoothie!

You can also sneak in other healthy ingredients like spinach or frozen cauliflower in this Reese’s smoothie!

And if the blend is not sweet enough for your sweet tooth, opt for a natural sweetener like pitted Medjool dates.

Tips For Making Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothie

Let the Blender Do the Work

Feel free to use your blender’s smoothie button and let it do its thing while you clean up.

Make Your Smoothie Really Smooth

Besides using a powerful blender, you can add more liquid if the mixture is too thick to blend smoothly. Start at a low speed, gradually increase to high, then end at a low speed to keep the smoothie from getting foamy.

Thicken Without a Banana

Instead of a frozen banana, you can also thicken your healthy peanut butter cup smoothie with avocado! Don’t worry, you won’t be able to tell it’s there.

  1. Yes. When I see chocolate smoothie pictures, this is what I imagine it should taste like. I’ve made it to your specifications and it is amazing that way, so know that when I rave, it’s not *only* about my tweaked version. 🙂 I tend to prefer almond butter, so I use that, unless I’m sharing with my husband, who loves peanut. In place of water, I will usually use any leftover cold coffee, because, caffeine! Also, I don’t have a terribly powerful blender, so I just quickly powder the oats and seeds before adding the remaining ingredients.

This is my favorite smoothie right now and I wake up thinking about it. If I can put this together before eating anything else, it saves me from mindlessly eating a cookie and starting off my day with junk. It’s so satisfying and carries me easily until lunch. Thanks so much for sharing with us!

      1. Since the main purpose of the frozen banana is to add a thick/creamy texture (besides nutrition, of course), I would freeze your greek yogurt to get a similar texture.

  3. I’m drinking it right now, and it’s pretty darn good! The greek yogurt makes it a little more tangy than I would have liked maybe, but its still flippin delicious!!! I was craving chocolate today, so this is perfect!

  4. What an amazing combo of YUM! HOLY PEANUT BUTTER CUPS!! We love smoothies too, and I love being able to make them healthy. This is the Bomb! Printing…pinning…enjoying soon. Thanks so much for sharing and congrats on being featured at Totally Tasty Tuesday!!

    1. Aren’t smoothies amazing?! Thank you so much for coming by and checking out the recipe. And let me know if you try it out yourself. You’ll love it!

  5. I make a super similar smoothie except I sub the ice/water with frozen bananas (you can’t taste them with the chocolate and pb) and I sometimes add a handful of spinach (you can’t taste this either) its the best of both worlds!

    1. I sometimes add spinach in as well. This recipe actually does have both the ice AND frozen bananas. I personally like my smoothies as thick as I can make them. Especially the more dessert-tasting ones. Make it seem more like ice cream 🙂

    1. GAH, I WISH i had more neighbors who would come over and eat all the food I make! Consider yourself invited!

  6. Ah, yes, those darn Reeses trees. Two weeks post Christmas and they are STILL taunting me 🙂 ha. ha. Chocolate and peanut butter are two of my favorite combinations, and I love, love, love guilt-free desserts! I even have all of this in my pantry right now. I seriously am going to have to make this. Thanks for the recipe. BTW, do you happen to have the calorie count?

  7. Would like all the nutritional data including carbs and calories and protein before I go out an buy the ingredients.
