I want to ask you what is in your way of reaching your health and wellness goals. I’ve heard so many different answers regarding this. Let me give you a few examples:

* My house is too small to workout in and I’m not comfortable exercising outside. I can’t find the space to exercise.

* A gym is too expensive for my budget. I can’t round up the extra money to spend on exercise equipment or a gym membership.

* I am a full time single mom who can barely get a moment to pee by myself, let alone find a moment to do a crunch or two. I can’t find the time to take care of myself.

There are many other statements like them, but they all have one thing in common. These statements. The I can’t statements. They are lies that you are telling yourself. Because it’s not that you can’t do these things that are getting in your way, but you’re not WILLING to try to overcome these obstacles. What I’m hearing is that you are putting these obstacles in front of your ability to get healthy and happy. You are telling me that the uncomfortable feelings that you may feel by exercising outside is too much that you will put that in front of your health.

I want to tell you what I know. You can do hard things. You can do things that make you feel a little uncomfortable for a little while. You can do things that you don’t think you can do. Your goals are right in front of you. Much of the time, it’s just you that’s standing in your own way. Your fears. Your doubts. Your hesitations. Your inability or lack of desire to work through hurdles and find a way.

Your goals are important, and it’s important for us to stop saying that we can’t reach them. I didn’t use to think I could beat my eating disorder. I thought I would always be controlled by food. When asked why I didn’t just let go, I said over and over that I just can’t. Well guess what. One day, I just did. I stopped saying I can’t. Instead, I put one foot in front of the other, felt a whole lot of really uncomfortable feelings over the next few months, years, and even still sometimes. But the truth of the matter is that I can, and I’m proving that to myself.

      It’s true. I never would have thought I could beat my ED. In fact, I’m pretty sure I said numerous times that I just Can’t do it. Obviously wrong – thank goodness!!

    I like how you are calling us out on our excuses, and helping us see the truth about them: they are lies we tell ourselves. This is a great post for anything in our lives that we feel resistance to – exercise and more!

      Jenny, you’re right, I guess I am kinda calling everyone out huh? I’m totally a no BS kind of gal, and I can smell an excuse miles away. Yes, this can apply to so many areas in our lives!

    This is such a powerful post, it has great wisdom and advice for us that get caught up in the “I can’t.” That in itself is the hardest step of all, is getting over the “I can’t.”

      It is true Courtney. I caught myself saying many “i can’ts” this weekend, and the thing is I CAN! I am strong. I can do hard things. I can do things I don’t think I can. But getting past that truly is difficult. It’s a mind-switch that must happen in order to start reaching goals.
